Secrets of Transportation

Piccadilly

The lives of transported ancestors were often kept hidden from both those left behind and the transportee’s descendants. The 1976 publication of Alex Haley’s drama Roots in America and the 1988 Bi-centennial Anniversary of European settlement in Australia, opened the door to this history and for many the “convict stain” transformed into a mark of “royalty”. Digitization of records and advances in DNA technology, are helping more and more family historians reveal the secrets behind the lives of their transported relatives.
