“Ready for a lark with a free gentleman” Male prostitution in Nineteenth Century London

In the Nineteenth Century male prostitutes were a common sight on London’s streets; they would parade in the Piccadilly Circus area and around the West End looking for patrons. This lecture will look at the social history aspects of their world as well as the legal changes that took place in the aftermath of the 1885 Criminal Law Amendment Act. It will look at some of the scandals of the time, including the Cleveland Street Affair of 1889 and the role John Saul (Dublin Jack), perhaps one of the most well-known rent boys of his time, played in it.
