The power of female inheritance of title

Westminster

Genealogical approaches to inheritance tend to focus on the male line, with primogeniture still prevailing, but there are instances of peerages and inheritances designed for female inheritors. This lecture uses as case studies the Baronies of Berners and Lucas of Crudwell with a particular focus on the Barony of Crudwell, which was a unique peerage created for a woman and designed to be inherited equally by male or female heirs. Erin will consider how female inheritance affects the longevity of titles and the legal and social difficulties encountered by heiresses through their peerages.
